Tonight while talking to my friend Richie on AIM he asked me if I was excited to be alive at a serious turning point in our nation’s history, to have been of voting age and watch the first black person be elected as President. My answer is pretty mixed–yes and no.

Yes, because it truly is monumental when taking a step back to reflect upon the fact that there was a 109-year-old woman who had lived through a time as not only an African American but also being a woman she was not allowed to vote. And now, when she was able to cast her ballot in favor of the first serious black man to run for the position. To have to convince the nation throughout his whole campaign that he is not involved in terrorist activities, not incapable based on his race, and truly interested in moving the country in a positive direction during an economic decline was no small feat. In making it to this point he has really shown his intentions are (hopefully) honorable.

No, because I do not see this as a historically positive event unless this man really helps turn around where we are headed economically and with the liberties that should be afforded to our citizens. I am referring specifically to a woman’s right to choose what she does with her body and the ability for anyone to marry the person they love instead of being ruled by an outdated set of religion-based morals. Without action that helps our nation he will have been afforded an amazing opportunity that he then wasted. Not only will it be a mark upon his record, but it will certainly prevent any more “underdogs” from being elected in years to come.

I am delirious at this moment, and this whole entry might not make sense. Here’s to hoping I didn’t fill in the wrong bubble and potentially help an unworthy individual become the figurehead of our nation.

I’m sorry, but does anyone like Sarah Palin? I’m leaning towards no right now. As I’ve been dealing with mostly women for the past nine months (god help me) I’ve noticed that a bunch of the girls that were all kinds of gung-ho about voting for Hilary are shifting their interest in Palin’s direction.

I’m sorry, but are you people really so fucking stupid as to not notice what’s being done here? Are you not terrified that the Republican party has essentially put a ventriloquist dummy next to McCain on the ticket? What’s going to happen to the cunt-ry (har har) when McCain has more health problems, dies, and we’re left with this little puppet in control of our nation? I’m freaked out by someone who didn’t even get briefed about some pretty basic interview topics. She compared herself to Abe Lincoln as she’s trying to tell me what to do with whatever sprouts up in my uterus. FAIL.

Few things scare me as much as the idea that this broad actually stands a chance of in any way being in control of how our nation is run. Apparently Matt Damon agrees with me.

I can’t stop laughing at this. Clearly the liberal press is out to keep the white man down.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that a lot of what I post politically relates to Hillary and Barack. The reason for this is because that’s where I see the most clarification is needed. Would I like to see a woman be president? Sure, whatever. My underlying concern is who is going to make the best president for the US right now.

The video below is of why the former President of Chicago NOW, Lorna Brett Howard, talking about why she switched from supporting Hillary Clinton to supporting Barack Obama. This is relating to women’s reproductive rights issues.

That’s right, Obama has a 100% voting record on the subject. Yet again Hillary is attempting to spread rumors that are utterly untrue about Barack. What is this, fourth or fifth instance of her inaccurate accusations being publicized??

When it comes down to it, I think Hillary is relying heavily on the votes of women who want to see another female take their place in the white house. Which would be fine if I thought she was going to be able to stick to her guns on any topic. However, it appears some women are not interested in supporting Hillary based on her support for the war in Iraq.

Tomorrow is the super-Tuesday primary. I have my fingers crossed people come to their senses before then and quit voting for someone just because of what’s between their legs.

Yes, you read that right. I’m writing this post assuming you guys heard about the question asked of Mrs. Clinton that left her teary-eyed… and may have led to her win on Tuesday night in New Hampshire. The more amusing portion of this little story is that while Marianne Pernold says she believes that Hilary’s response was the real deal, she still voted for Obama.

Oh, what a tangled web politicians’ emotional responses weave!

Everyone knows between Clinton & Obama we have two big firsts as far as “main” candidates go. A woman and a black man, well holy cow! Ever since I was a little girl I’ve dreamed of the day I would see a woman in the white house. I was young in the early 90′s, and that whole “girl power!” shit was running rampant. Those Spice Girls, they sure did teach me a lot about being an independent woman. As usual, I digress. I wish I could say I’m excited about the fact that Hillary is trying to secure the Democratic nomination… but there’s one thing that’s really starting to agitate me. I have watched the Republicans fuck things up left and right for the past two presidential terms, so I’m more interested in seeing a united Democratic front than anything else right now.

Strangely enough, rumors about Obama continue to be traced back to people involved with the Clinton campaign. Strike one was back when Fox News reported Obama was a practicing Muslim, based off an email that had been forwarded by a female volunteer. There were a few other incidents of words like Osama and Obama managing to be mixed up during interviews–gee whilikers, must’ve been a slip of the tongue! However, the most recent issue is the fact that Hillary’s co-chair resigned over Obama drug use remark.

Helpful Hint: you cannot throw something like youthful drug use in the face of a man that included it in his memoirs.

Personally, I’ve kindof enjoyed the fact that I know what Obama was up to in college. I mean, it’s not like he won’t admit to going AWOL or multiple charges for possession and usage of cocaine like George W. Remember back when Bill Clinton did that interview and talked about how he had smoked marijuana but “hadn’t inhaled”? (If you’re 20 or older, you probably should.) Perhaps my favorite comment from Obama regarding drug use came from an interview he did for the New Yorker.

“I inhaled — that was the point.”

I’m down with politicians who are honest. Which is probably one of the the larger oxymorons to ever grace this blog.

To lighten the mood after all this political business that I blog about (and most of you probably ignore), here is a video from Lisa Nova with a short “debate” between Hillary and Barrack. It’s okay to laugh people, it’s all in good fun.

For some reason perusing YouTube videos led me to politifact.com–which I have to say I never would’ve known existed if it weren’t for their incredibly lame video involving what I think might be a theme song. They have this to say about themselves:

PolitiFact is a project of the St. Petersburg Times and Congressional Quarterly to help you find the truth in the presidential campaign. Every day, reporters and researchers from the Times and CQ will analyze the candidates’ speeches, TV ads and interviews and determine whether the claims are accurate.

Awesome! Apparently someone in the wide world of American journalism realized most of the people out there have no idea about the accuracy of most political statements. While I appreciate the effort, I was seriously bummed by one thing: more than a few of the articles on the site remind me of the snarky reviews I read in Rolling Stone of varying celebrities. I absolutely hate their layout as well, though I am a fan of the “truth-o-meter” images they used. We’ll see if the site continues to draw attention or not, or if the project ends up falling by the wayside.

——

I am writing this at close to 5:30am because I fell asleep close to seven after two glasses of red wine and didn’t wake up until 2am. I think this may be the second time I’ve drank wine since I went to Italy at 17, so I was unaware that wine commonly makes people sleepy.

I demand a warning label, since they put them on anything else an idiot might not already know about.

Most people who know me personally realize I have a slight obsession with politics and the youth of today’s lack of involvement or interest in them. Every so often I will meet someone else approximately my age who also has a “thing” for politics. However, most of these people are basket cases that enjoy filling my ears with all sorts of conspiracy theories involving the US government and it’s various cover-ups. If there was just one or two it’d be one thing, but after a while you have to accept the fact that entire government is not out to get you. That’s just too much work.

Upon seeing this tidbit from Bill Maher’s show, I thought I should share. You know, just in case you are also used sick of listening to conspiracy theorists and what they have to say about 9/11.

I have been thinking about politics seriously since the year 2000. This was when I realized that almost every person I knew that was 18 had no intention of voting in the election. And then this last election, when I was finally old enough to fill out a ballot that is supposed to allow me the opportunity to choose who leads our country. Last night I saw the movie “Sicko” and, as much as Michael Moore annoys me, could not help but think about how many of my friends have to health care–and really need it. I just finished reading an essay from the book Generation What? edited by Bess Vanrenen about one 24 year old college graduate during the night of November 2nd, 2004 as the results of the election was reported on TV with a country that was primarily red.

Right now, I am angry at my generation. I am mad about all the people I hear saying they have no intention of voting because, and I quote, “it’s not like it will make a difference anyway.” Who are these people? Aren’t a hefty portion of you the result of parents that admit to having been politically active in the 70′s? All the faces I am coming into contact with seem to be painted with the same, depressing cynicism I thought would only be expressed by my grandparents’ generation. For whatever reason our haircuts, outfits, LiveJournal and Myspace accounts seem far more important to us than who will be advocating either side of a policy that could prevent us from terminating an accidental pregnancy. I have friends that I haven’t seen since they joined the Army, most of which are now stationed overseas and will not return to US soil for another 18 months. Were I able to speak to any of them for an extended period now, I know I would end up inquiring if they think their experience there is worth the potential for money to go to college eight years after they joined up. Strangely, I am tired of listening to a 23 year old spew forth the same things they saw on a satirical late night TV show without having done any research for themselves.

I am constantly overhearing portions of conversations that revolve around politics and asking myself, “who are these people?” I’m not sure what term they are using these days to address the general populace born around the same time I was, but I’m definitely noticing a trend. None of us are thinking about who’s in office for more than the half-assed argument we have with someone with differing political views. Why is it these kids* will take the time to vote for the legalization of medicinal marijuana (thereby creating larger legal repercussions for those caught with it and lacking a prescription) but have never voted on laws relating to foreign policy, decreasing our impact on the planet, or reforms of the health care industry? I cannot say I know a single person in my age demographic that is anything close to politically active. Their idea of being such, generally, involves sitting in a coffee house smoking cigarettes and complaining about Bush.

Where is our Che Guevara? Is there no modern-day Alice Paul waiting in the wings to lead the women of my generation to the polls? We need a revolutionary, a face with a name that people actually want to listen to. While this is what we need, it is not what appears to be present. Stay tuned for another election that without our action will be controlled thanks to paid TV campaigns, MTV’s Rock the Vote and late-night programming aimed to entertain.

* I am in no way trying to infer than those of my generation are comparable to children. Oh wait, yes I am.
