A moment in history
5 Nov
Tonight while talking to my friend Richie on AIM he asked me if I was excited to be alive at a serious turning point in our nation’s history, to have been of voting age and watch the first black person be elected as President. My answer is pretty mixed–yes and no.
Yes, because it truly is monumental when taking a step back to reflect upon the fact that there was a 109-year-old woman who had lived through a time as not only an African American but also being a woman she was not allowed to vote. And now, when she was able to cast her ballot in favor of the first serious black man to run for the position. To have to convince the nation throughout his whole campaign that he is not involved in terrorist activities, not incapable based on his race, and truly interested in moving the country in a positive direction during an economic decline was no small feat. In making it to this point he has really shown his intentions are (hopefully) honorable.
No, because I do not see this as a historically positive event unless this man really helps turn around where we are headed economically and with the liberties that should be afforded to our citizens. I am referring specifically to a woman’s right to choose what she does with her body and the ability for anyone to marry the person they love instead of being ruled by an outdated set of religion-based morals. Without action that helps our nation he will have been afforded an amazing opportunity that he then wasted. Not only will it be a mark upon his record, but it will certainly prevent any more “underdogs” from being elected in years to come.
I am delirious at this moment, and this whole entry might not make sense. Here’s to hoping I didn’t fill in the wrong bubble and potentially help an unworthy individual become the figurehead of our nation.
